| —Bow and Marshmallow, Afterlife in The Limelight | ||
"Kick the Bucket" is the 11th episode of Inanimate Insanity II, and the 29th episode overall.
It was released as a 2-part episode, the 1st part released on December 23, 2016, and the 2nd part released on February 4, 2017. A combined full version was released on March 25, 2017.
Synopsis[]
After MePad catches a contestant breaking the rules, tensions begin to overflow. Some are able to plug up the holes in their relationships and are all the better for it! However, others manage to sink further. When they empty themselves of their conflicting emotions, new feelings are filled right in their place, and not all of them are positive! Just as water goes through an infinite cycle, there appears to be no end in sight for some of these perpetually damaged connections. That is, unless someone were to finally break the chain.
Also, there is a crab.
Plot[]
Part 1[]
Marshmallow, carrying her drawing of Bow, heads to Purgatory Mansion where she is interrupted by MePad, who warns her that she is passing the show's physical parameters. Marshmallow ignores the warning and enters the mansion; she calls for Bow, wanting to talk about Apple, but first encounters Dough before Bow appears and complains about Dough's annoying tendencies.
The next day, MePhone4 unexpectedly calls the Bright Lights for elimination, despite Toilet's repeated reminder that there's no elimination scheduled after the previous episode's tie. Realizing his mistake, MePhone announces the winner of the challenge vote: Bucket Brigade. The two teams must transport water to fill reservoirs, raising platforms in order to get keys to open balls that must be thrown at a target. The team that throws all of their balls at their target first wins, and the other team will be put up for elimination; MePhone then hints that the contestants will now be voting for each other, instead of the viewers.
Balloon supports Suitcase after failing to make a joke at MePhone's expense, much to Nickel's annoyance. In an alliance meeting, he pressures her to distance herself from Balloon, but Baseball defends Suitcase’s right to choose her friends. Nickel begrudgingly agrees, but notes that he doesn't want friendships and a strategic alliance to blend. He then lets Suitcase decide what Balloon will do for the challenge; she assigns Balloon to filling the bucket with water, a critical role in the challenge.
Meanwhile, in the forest, Taco plots to sabotage Balloon by having Microphone attack him with a "temporary paralyzer" as a means to get any potential targets of Mic's back, but she resists and, when approaching Balloon on the dock, lowers her gain to avoid Taco’s demands. Instead, she undermines and damages Balloon’s confidence by suggesting he could be responsible for his team's loss while in his current position.
Before the challenge starts, Paintbrush notices Marshmallow’s absence, alarming them. MePhone declares that if she doesn’t return next episode, she will be disqualified; the notion leaves Paintbrush and Fan distraught, each for different reasons. Meanwhile, at Purgatory Mansion, Marshmallow is distraught over Apple's prior betrayal, continuing to question if anything on the show is real. She then starts to believe Bow is hiding something about the situation, where she admits shortly after to having possessed Apple to make it seem like she was manipulating Marshmallow.
The challenge then starts, with the Bright Lights being initially slowed down by Fan's obsession with patterns and Lightbulb's shenanigans where she finds a crab. Balloon then causes the Grand Slams to slow down by tripping on the dock and dropping his bucket into the water. Nickel urges Suitcase to get the bucket back, and she dives into the water. Hearing voices and seeing hallucinations that seemingly try to pull her underwater, she surfaces with the bucket, which Nickel takes. Balloon tells Suitcase she was underwater for a while and asks if she's alright, to which she replies: "Never better."
Part 2[]
Back at Purgatory Mansion, Marshmallow is in disbelief about how Bow caused Apple to say those manipulative things. Bow then explains how her possession works. When asked why she did it, Bow reveals that she felt a need to level “level the playing field,” to get attention from Marshmallow, and that she feels like she's nothing now that she's no longer a part of the game. She and Marshmallow then share a song with Afterlife in The Limelight, where the two sing about their beliefs over what the show and the connections formed within mean to them. During the song, the two teams continue to the second part of the challenge while MePad and Toilet discuss the emotional states of the contestants. After the song, Bow suggests Marshmallow leave the game behind and move in with her and Dough. Marshmallow agrees, but only if she can bring someone.
Meanwhile, the two teams begin to throw their balls at their targets. Knife and Microphone get the first two hits for the Grand Slams, while Paintbrush and Fan get the first two for the Bright Lights. Test Tube and Balloon are the final competitors for their teams; Test Tube hits her target while Balloon misses, meaning the Bright Lights win the challenge. In the aftermath, Taco applauds Microphone for her manipulative tactics, accrediting them to Balloon's failure in the challenge.
Suitcase, upset from the outcome of the challenge and the inevitable elimination results, lays down by the dock. Knife sits down on the dock to skip stones and talk to her. He suggests that Nickel was setting up Balloon’s potential failure to justify his elimination, which Suitcase doubts at first. Knife then asks Suitcase why she puts up with her alliance, and urges her to try and "make her presence known," which she considers.
The elimination takes place in a new, torch-lit area at night, where MePhone officially announces that the contestants will vote for each other. Each member of the Grand Slams votes one by one, with Suitcase being the last one. After struggling to decide who to vote for, she makes her decision, and the votes are read. Balloon receives five of the six votes and is eliminated. Noticing that Nickel received a single vote (one that wasn't his own) he tries to hide Suitcase's potential vote for Nickel, which Suitcase then reveals after Nickel remarks about the situation.
Nickel is shocked and upset at Suitcase for going against the alliance, but Suitcase suggests that their alliance may not have felt true to her, as it was never anything personal. At first, it just seems like Suitcase has burned bridges with Nickel after voting incorrectly, but MePhone then announces a surprise double elimination, where Nickel is also eliminated due to Suitcase's sole vote. He laughs off the betrayal, while Balloon thanks Suitcase for standing up for him. After they both go through the Rejection Portal, Suitcase remarks about the situation not going how she expected, with Baseball extremely upset over Nickel's elimination and Knife questioning what an alliance truly means to her. Meanwhile, Marshmallow briefly returns to the show parameters to reunite with Apple, and the two presumably leave together to live with Bow in Purgatory Mansion, leaving the game behind.
In a post-credits scene, Lightbulb names the crab she found during the challenge "Baxter." Baxter then pinches Lightbulb and jumps back into the lake, leaving Lightbulb to lament.

Production Notes[]
Continuity[]
- This is the 2nd time Purgatory Mansion appears since it premiered in "Let 'Er R.I.P".
- The mansion has also been redesigned and features many new rooms - including the foyer and bar room.
- This is the 2nd appearance of Bow and Dough since "Let 'Er R.I.P".
- However, this is the 2nd time we hear Dough speak since his cameo in "A Kick in the Right Direction".
- Hotel OJ makes a cameo in the background during Toilet's scene.
- When Dough gets close to Bow and she pushes him away is a reference to "A Kick in the Right Direction".
- This is the first time since "Breaking the Ice" that Test Tube explains something about the challenge before she participates.
- This episode makes many ties to "Aquatic Conflict", the 11th episode of Season 1.
- A crab appears coming out of Lightbulb's mouth. The last animal that appeared was a shark.
- Lightbulb wears a scuba mask similar to those worn during the Aquatic Conflict challenge.
- Lightbulb tells Paintbrush she's looking for the golden coin, which was the challenge in the 11th episode of Season 1. Paintbrush notes that Lightbulb is "an entire season behind."
- Just like the 11th episode of last season, the 11th episode of this season has a double elimination, although this one was a surprise.
- This is the first appearance of Dr. Fizz since "Tri Your Best".
- This is the 3rd time Suitcase opened herself. The first 2 were in "Marsh on Mars" and "Theft and Battery".
- Suitcase's hallucinations carry over and intensify from the previous episode.
- While the voices talk to Suitcase underwater, a faint "tick-tock" can be heard repeating, similar to how Mecintosh did in "Theft and Battery".
- This is the first episode since "Sugar Rush" to have contestants voting to eliminate other contestants. It has since become the standard elimination voting method.
- Bow's line "I was floating in nothingness, for, like, ever, y'know?" references to her being killed off in "Journey Through Memory Lane (Part 2)".
Cultural References[]
- The painting of objects playing pokers inside the mansion in a reference to Cassius Marcellus Coolidge's 1894 painting Dogs Playing Pokers.
- The new elimination area is heavily inspired by the ones used in the CBS reality show, Survivor.
Trivia[]
- This was technically the longest episode in the entire series, being more than half an hour long (which is partly the reason why the episode got split into 2 parts).
- This episode remained the longest in the series until the release of "Through No Choice of Your Own", which had a runtime of 33 minutes. This however was beaten by "Objects in Mirror", which had a runtime of 47 minutes. In total, Inanimate Insanity II: The Movie is 1 hour and 47 minutes with all three acts.
- This episode's title, "Kick the Bucket", is a double entendre. While it references the bucket brigade challenge, it also is an English idiom or slang term meaning "to die" - referencing Bow's death.
- The trailer for the episode was uploaded on November 11, which is Remembrance Day (Commonwealth)/Veterans Day (United States of America). This may have been on purpose, as November 11th is 11/11, and this is the 11th episode of Season 2.
- This is the 3rd episode of Inanimate Insanity that is split into 2 parts.
- The 1st split was "Journey Through Memory Lane (Part 1)" and "Journey Through Memory Lane (Part 2)", and the 2nd split was "Rain On Your Charade" and "Mazed and Confused".
- However, this episode's split is unique, as the 2-parter still accounts as 1 episode, rather than 2 separate episodes.
- As noted by a Tweet from Taylor Grodin, this episode contains the most screaming he has ever done in an episode. [1]
- This is supported by Paintbrush's, Bow's and Toilet's screaming.
- This is the 3rd time the number on the thumbnail representing the episode's number is colored other than blue. In "Everything's A-OJ", the color was orange. In "Mazed and Confused", the color was red.
- Kick the Bucket (Part 1) is the second time since "Mazed and Confused" that Knife plays a minor role in an episode, as he has no on-screen speaking roles, but can be heard off-screen once.
- This is the first time a contestant (intentionally) leaves exits the parameters of the show.
- Balloon and Nickel are the 2nd and 3rd returning contestants that have been eliminated.
- This is the 1st episode in Season 2 that has a double elimination. And which makes it similar to the episode in Season 1.
- This is the 1st time that the contestants vote someone out in Season 2.
- This is due to the creators wanting to focus more on the story than just only the competition.
- This is the 1st episode to completely utilize the new budget from the Kickstarter.
- Despite the episode mostly taking place during the day, the first scene depicts Marshmallow and MePad at dusk.
- Fan's "Fan Theory #1082" seen in the episode seems to foreshadow events from the following episodes, mentioning how "a hole would be forged in time", "pasts would be exposed", and that "otherworldly forces would reign".
- Bow calling Apple "Kumquat" and saying to Marshmallow "I'll be frank with you, Marsh, and I don't even know who Frank is" may have been foreshadowing the appearance of the characters Kumquat and Frank in the following episode, "Alternate Reality Show".
- With Nickel eliminated, Baseball is the highest-placing male armless contestant in Inanimate Insanity II.
- With Balloon eliminated, there are no members left that were part of Team Chickenleg.
- This is the third episode to not have any deaths.
Errors[]
- Due to some small glitches, the episode was temporarily removed to fix them. [2]
- After Taco listens to the alliance's conversation, her thumb is positioned incorrectly on her headphones.
- In the original upload, an entire section of audio was missing after Microphone approached Balloon on the dock.
- This has been fixed by a re-upload.
- When Paintbrush gets out of the water, their bristles are down, However, in real life, they stand straight up.
- During the elimination, Microphone is seen crossing her fingers until the 3rd vote for Balloon being called out, However when it cuts to Nickel her arms can be seen down in the background.
- In the "Part 2 Little 2 Late" announcement video in the sneak peek, the Grand Slam's chest is colored brown, while in the episode it can be seen colored in their team color green.
- Also in the "Part 2 Little 2 Late" announcement video in the sneak peak, the Grand Slam's chest has 3 balls while Knife threw the ball to the target.
- One noteable error present for Part 1 at 3:51 is the captions containing the word "f*cking", despite there being no foul language present in the episode itself.
- In the captions at 7:08, Nickel's name is misspelled as Nickle.
