—Ballpoint Pen's review

"Out of Body Experience" is the 8th episode of Inanimate Insanity Invitational and the 40th episode overall. Part 1 was released on April 15, 2022 and Part 2 was released on April 29, 2022. A full version of the episode was released on June 25, 2022.

Synopsis[]

When a special guest visits the island, MePhone scrambles to put on a perfect show. But when a complication arises, the contestants realize they have no choice but to face themselves.

Plot[]

Pre-Intro[]

The episode starts off with Silver Spoon recording an ad of the show for the groscers, with him and Paintbrush arguing about who's getting the award. Clover tries to say she always wanted an award before Silver Spoon interrupting her in order to prevent her good luck to make it come true. The ad then goes to show the following challenge with Paintbrush presenting it as "a challenge that'll make their face a star's face" before being interrupted by The Floor right beneath their step.

Balloon and Bot talk about the latter being in that ad, with Bot showing their displeasure towards that idea while putting on a hat and pretending they know about making commercials. Balloon assumes the new team's intimidating them too, to which Bot replies about not feeling like themself lately. Candle reunites everyone for a group picture by MePhone's request, which Nickel decides not to be in. Once the photo is taken, Yin-Yang suggests a reshoot as Yin blinked. Unfortunately, the next reshoot features all the contestants about to be crushed by the pink half of the challenge bridge with Yin blinking again. Nickel comes back after this before being told by MePhone that everyone died.

Post-Intro[]

MePhone is seen fixing the bridge in fear the guest won't notice what happened, before describing said guest to Bot as "a terrifying pointy-headed authority figure who MePhone craved only his approval out of". The guest is seen in a silhouette resembling Steve Cobs, only to be revealed as a completely different person; Ballpoint Pen.

Once he arrives, MePhone immediately tries to revive everyone at once, which takes its time to load. Meanwhile, Ballpoint Pen explains his code for judging entertainment and states his observations about MePhone's new season. He notices the absence of every contestant excluding Bot and Nickel before everyone else is revived on the wrong bodies. Ballpoint Pen questions everyone being misnamed, to which Candle lies by saying they're roleplaying as each other as an exercise of empathy. Everyone else reacts about their swapped bodies, Clover being happy that her luck can't hurt anyone anymore, Balloon (in Goo's body) stating his loss of limbs, and Paintbrush stating their loss of their whole body while being afraid of The Floor (in Paintbrush's body) making them look weird during their chance at stardom.

Challenge[]

MePhone announces the challenge; racing to the bridge's center before the other person in one-against-one rounds, with the team that wins the least matchups being up for elimination. In the first round, Clover and Test Tube are matched up against each other. Clover tries to guess what number Test Tube was thinking about, only to cheer at her own failure. Test Tube, being in Clover's body, is lucky enough to win thanks to the wind carrying her to the center of the bridge. Once she gets out of the bridge, Bot walks up to her while reading Cabby's file on Bot, who needs help reading a really blotchy part. She hands the file over to Test Tube, who reads the file. Said file burns to ashes once she reads the "Likes chairs" phrase on Bot's file.

The next matchup is The Floor against Paintbrush. Ballpoint Pen acknowledges Paintbrush as a frontrunner for Best Reality Show Star, to which The Floor (on their body) makes them look weird. The Floor, still struggling to use Paintbrush's body properly, teaches Paintbrush how to move as a face on the ground, seeming panicked about the "red spot" The Floor goes between pops before deciding to just "wing it" and try teleporting to the center. They win, stating they had a downright cosmic journey and learning that attention isn't everything, knowing no one saw any of that.

Silver Spoon tries to control Candle's ability to fly by having someone else blow out the flame on her body, almost swaying Clover, who does a pitiful attempt at blowing out the flame before giving up. Once matched up against Candle on his body, he requests a glass of water to put the flame down. Once he uses it for that, he falls down, with no effect. Candle (in Silver Spoon's body) wins by just walking to the center. Ballpoint Pen comments the scenario as a "truly amusing commentary on burnout culture" before letting out a laugh mocked by Silver Spoon right afterwards.

Bot talks to Goo (who is in Balloon's body) about asking Candle for their aura again. Goo tries to dissuade them with an eulogy about answers being like popcorn (tasty in the moment but then stuck in your teeth forever) and letting out a timid hoo-ray before leaving. Balloon and Goo are matched up against each other, turning out to prove MePhone's claim of them being the least intimidating possible matchup as they take five hours to cross half the bridge, much to Clover's surprise and her claiming that's why there should be no luck. The Floor replies to her you can't get rid of luck, although you can equally distribute it, to which Candle agrees

Nickel tells Clover to not listen to them, agreeing with Clover that her luck needed to go and stating her wish of getting rid of her luck came true, before realizing her wish came true in the first place thanks to her luck (one of her butterflies made the bridge kill everyone which led to MePhone reviving everyone in swapped bodies) and calling her out on being a privileged murderer, much to Clover going back to worrying about her twisted luck without Candle's input on the deaths not being Clover's fault not helping matters. A while later, MePhone reveals Balloon won and states how Ballpoint Pen called it bold and experimental despite him thinking it sucked and seeing an opportunity for II to run forever. Once Nickel points out there not being any body swaps left, Yin-Yang points out they swapped bodies with each other. MePhone then asks Bot to pretend like she isn't in her own body for the challenge.

The final round matches up Bot against Yin-Yang. Bot does an act of being in the wrong body, while Yin and Yang come to a mutual understanding after an actual bickering. Bot gets flashbacks from their broken part while on their act and asks for a timeout, after which MePhone attempts a commercial break with an old Bow ad from the archives. Meanwhile, Candle tries to talk to Bot about their aura, which the latter picks up quickly on how it's missing and how that's not all I figured out, proceeding to call out Test Tube on saving them as she knew they couldn't be brought back to life if they died. Test Tube tells her they couldn't accept Bow's death and made the Bot here as a replica to bring them back as the Bow everyone knew and loved, even replying to Candle that she wasn't worried over people not believing Bow was really back, in which Bot questions about them being the same as Bow but a robot, a Bowbot. However, Bot angrily states that they and Bow aren't the same person as they don't have Bow's mind and cannot remember anything in her life. Bot then throws their hat on the ground, revealing their broken piece on their head, and walks away. Candle senses Bot's aura coming to the surface as it was no longer repressed by the expectations of them being Bow.

Test Tube proceeds to go to Bot and apologize to them, telling her she wants to do what she can offer to help Bot be themself. MePhone comes back a short time later, being also fazed by Bot's broken part and them begging him to not make them go back out there, to which MePhone replies he'll take care of. The final round resumes right afterwards, with Yin-Yang winning in a flash. MePhone awkwardly asks Ballpoint Pen about what he thought of his "favorite game" without knowing his favorite game was Bridge (the card game). MePhone asks Ballpoint Pen for another chance and make the contestants play the actual card game, but Ballpoint Pen still refuses to give him the chance and tells him that he should be making something he actually believes in, rather than something for him, and that he can't control if they enjoy it or not as if he tries to, he forgets the most important part of creating; "if you don't have a ball, then what's the point?". He finishes by giving MePhone his review, which is a sheet of paper that says "You can't do this forever", before disappearing.

Yin-Yang comes to MePhone asking for the confetti for a personal victory of them, which MePhone denies since The Thinkers lost the challenge 3 to 2. Silver Spoon states that he learned something about controlling his inner flame and it was getting a bigger flame, as he pulls out a large, lit matchstick. He accidentally tosses the lit matchstick away as he swings his arms up and burns the entire island, killing everyone in the process.

Elimination[]

MePhone revives everyone one by one before starting the elimination ceremony. It reveals Yin-Yang winning immunity once again and Clover being eliminated with 6 votes against her, as everyone voted for her so she can't cause anyone any harm with her luck. She decides to help everyone instead of harming them by spreading her luck to everyone else, starting with Nickel, much to his dismay that Clover teases him over. Clover then calls Cordelia, Catalina, Cassandra and Jake (her 4 butterflies) and flies away as everyone waves them goodbye, with Nickel sobbing face-first on the floor and even the Fist Thingy waving a tissue. Goo expresses his joy about being on TV and how he can't wait for it to happen again, to which MePhone replies by saying it's not needed as it only aired once for the awards eligibility. The Floor states how broadcast television was dead and wonders if anyone even watched, after which it cuts to the first scene of this episode in an old TV.

The old TV is revealed being in Purgatory Mansion, with Bow's arm showing up holding the remote for the TV as she turns it off out of disinterest.

Trivia[]

  • The title, "Out of Body Experience" is based of a phenomenon in which a person perceives the world from a location outside their physical body. [1]
  • This is the first Inanimate Insanity Invitational episode to feature contestant deaths.
  • The characters who switched bodies were:
  • When Yin and Yang are swapped, it is a reference of what Yin and Yang represents in Chinese philosophy:
    • The Yin, or the dark side, is associated with everything hard, negative, cold, wet, and feminine. The Yang, or the light side, is associated with things soft, positive, warm, dry, and masculine. But contrary to the harsh juxtaposition of their appearances, Yin and Yang are not complete opposites.
    • This can also be a reference to the fact that in real life Yin is the good side, and Yang is the bad side.
  • The very final scene of Bow turning off the TV seems to use Inanimate Insanity II's animation style.
  • The entirety of Part 2 of this episode was leaked on the social media platform TikTok just a day before release.
  • At 1:30, Paintbrush’s pose is a reference to their intro pose.
  • Right after revival, each character can be seen colored with a defining color of the one they switched with.
  • This is the only episode of Inanimate Insanity Invitational in which Cabby does not appear.
  • This is the only episode of season 3 to still have the episode number in the thumbnail.

Deaths[]

  • Test Tube, Clover, Balloon, Goo, Paintbrush, The Floor, Candle, Silver Spoon, and Yin-Yang were crushed to death by a falling tower and burnt to death by a match.
