—Steve Cobs to Suitcase and Knife |
"The Reality of the Situation"[1] is the 16th episode of Inanimate Insanity II, and the first act of Inanimate Insanity II: The Movie. It is the 53rd episode overall, and released on September 7, 2024. As announced in an AnimationEpic YouTube community post, the episode was released at 9 a.m. PST.[2]
Synopsis[]
Welcome to the long-awaited, not-to-be-interrupted, Inanimate Insanity season two FINALE! Our finalists, Knife and Suitcase, have battled their way to the end of a very bizarre competition, slowly adapting themselves with every challenge. But after a declined phone call results in deadly consequences, the two must put what they've learned to the test, and race to save everyone.
Plot[]
Cold Open[]
The episode starts with the Light Shimmers chasing MePhone1, MePhone3G and MePhone3GS, who are robbing unhatched shimmers. MePhone1 is slain by one of the Shimmer's spear, but the group proceeds. MePhone 3GS activates the Meeple Spaceship, and MePhone3G barely makes it to the ship before being slain with another spear. The Meeple spaceship escapes with MePhone3GS and only one egg, with the other falling off of the bridge and into space.
Before the challenge[]
MePhone4 welcomes the viewers once again, as Steve Cobs tries to call him while he keeps denying the calls. He then proceeds to present never-before-seen interviews of Suitcase and Knife, the season's finalists, auditioning for their respective debuting seasons.
Suitcase and Knife enter Hotel OJ, as it's owner and Paper welcome them to a party where everyone (except Tissues and the people currently at the Purgatory Mansion) is hanging out. Suitcase and Balloon begin a conversation about their relationships with everyone, and Balloon gets uncomfortable when being mentioned to Nickel. Later, Knife and Trophy discuss about the finalist's performance throughout the season. As Suitcase and Balloon's conversation continues, Nickel and Fan come along and mentions Season 3, which freaks Suitcase out. At this moment Cabby, Candle and later Goo appear and try to calm her down, but fail as she gets angry towards MePhone4, which heads to a room with Tissues, who tries to share a silence before returning to his coughing.
Taco, accompanied by MePad, heads towards Pickle's room and tries apologizing to him. Pickle exclaims he burnt Taco's letters, but Taco continues with her apology, explaining she never wanted to drag Pickle in her plans for Season 1. Pickle then calls Taco stupid, which maddens her. While MePhone4 talks to Tissues, he hears screams from other room, to then find Taco crying with Pickle's faceless corpse, which he can't recover with MeLife. MePad defends Taco and tells MePhone4 he didn't trust them. MePhone4 then exclaims that Steve Cobs had arrived and he needed MePad's help, which he denies for he officially resignated from the show. MePhone4 tells MePad to do it for Taco, not him. Back in the lobby, Suitcase talks to Knife about what she's heard, and MePad teleports to tell her everything's alright, as well as announcing the final challenge beginning soon.
Challenge[]
MePhone4 explains the challenge, which is to head towards the Meeple Headquarters with the hot-air balloon and defeat Steve Cobs. Suitcase asks him about him making another season, and he asks not to be interrupted. As the finalists start their challenge, MePhone4 says he's not afraid of Steve Cobs, but he has to stay alive or else it's "game over", and he doesn't know how to recover Pickle. He then asks Baseball and Lightbulb to protect him and everyone while he hides inside the closet. Fan hears sounds from above and tells everyone to beware of the Egg and join an adventure. Paper is worried, as the Spoiled Lemon show would become pointless, and Starfruit nervously mentions that Guava ditched the band. Baseball tries telling everyone to stay safe, but Lightbulb then tells everyone they can go outside, and Paintbrush, Test Tube and Fan proceed to leave together.
Before arriving to the Headquarters, Suitcase talks to Knife about getting away from all the drama. He tells her to not give her bad memories power, and Knife responds that she's starting to sound like MePhone4. They arrive to the Headquarters, and an assistant welcomes them with a message from CEO Steve Cobs ("The Future Is So Yesterday"). Suitcase finds the room where MePhone3GS was trapped. Yin-Yang asks Baseball why he told them not to go out, and he tries to respond to him as the Cherries suspect it was a prank. Baseball then asks Lightbulb what was going on, and she responds by not knowing and trying to keep "THE peace" between them two. OJ walks into a room and asks Paper to make the hats the shape of OJ, and he complains about him being so centered around himself. OJ then hears a siren. Lightbulb tries to make her own weird noises. OJ is the only one to hear this siren, and everyone wonders why he's starting to act weirdly. Only OJ sees MePhoneX in the room as he gets closer to him and starts panicking out. OJ then loses his face and limbs just like with Pickle, and everyone in the room screams.
Paintbrush, Test Tube and Fan arrive to the Purgatory Mansion, which was indicated to be source of the weird noises by one of Test Tube's gadgets. The Mansion's entrance door opens, and they head inside to find Bow screaming and Dough. Test Tube suspects from Bow since her screams sound like the Egg Spaceship, and Bow is confused. Bow then welcomes them to the mansion and starts talking to Paintbrush about how she got her tail, and Test Tube and Fan start to suspect the Mansion was set to form a dead end. Marshmallow goes down the stairs because the TV remote is malfunctioning. Everyone is surprised by her return, and Apple is surprised someone came in.
Heading back to the Headquarters, Suitcase proceeds to enter the room along with Knife, who's concerned about Steve Cobs branding everything with "Me". Inside the room, she finds an unfunctional Mecintosh. Knife tries booting MePhone3GS up, but he wakes up without his need. He says it's good to see someone. Knife asks help for a "Top Secret project", and MePhone3GS responds by checking his empty schedule. Knife then brings Cobs up, and MePhone3GS starts to malfunction as he comes to mind. He then explains how he survived the Prime Shimmer's attack but was underrated by Cobs even though he accomplished his mission. Knife finds a map to Cobs' room, and heads out with Suitcase. MePhone3GS warns them not to go, but isn't listened.
At Hotel OJ, Lightbulb tries to cheer up everyone after OJ's death, saying that it may have been an "Isolated incident" (or for short "II"), and Baseball heads to take a peek at the room where Taco stands with MePad and the dead body. He tries to comfort Nickel, who congratulates him for his positivity but still despises his timing. Nickel then hears the siren to soon after be attacked by MePhoneX, with Baseball showing a very terrified look on his face. Everyone screams along, such as Microphone and Starfruit worriedly and fearfully looking for Soap and Guava, hinting that they may have both got deleted off-screen. Lightbulb appears sort of scared to Baseball, who wants to keep the moment dark and tells everyone he doesn't know what to do, yet he's not afraid. He also asks for everyone to contact him if anything happened. MePhone4 proceeds to himself call Steve Cobs.
Suitcase and Knife enter Cobs' room, and he appears to know everything that happened. Suitcase asks him about the Shimmer, and Cobs ignores her question by connecting it to his "Me" branding. Knife doesn't believe in him, and asks him if he had the ability to kill objects. Steve Cobs responds that he did create annihilating devices, thinking they'd be useful for reality shows, and starts talking about how he "escaped from reality" while watching Inanimate Insanity. He wants the season to end and have a winner while still having his reputation be clean. Suitcase says MePhone4 is the owner of the show, and not Cobs, who asks them about how weird and unpredictable the show is. He then asks them about their auditioning interviews and proceeds to accept MePhone's call, where he lets the the contestants answer a question: How did they get to the interview? Suitcase and Knife do not know what to answer, and Cobs reveals that MePhone4 created his contestants for his sake. This causes Suitcase and Knife to get an existential crisis and start glitching.

- Suitcase and Knife use their team's Hot Air Balloon from "Theft and Battery" to reach MeCloud.

- In Suitcase and Knife's interviews, their oldest assets are used (from "Breaking the Ice" and "The Crappy Cliff" respectively).
- MePhone4 hides inside of the closet used to contain the eliminated contestants from "Marsh on Mars" to "Everything's A-OJ".
- This episode revealed that all of the contestants were directly created by MePhone4, having no backstories prior to the show whatsoever.
- This revelation has been purposefully foreshadowed by the crew several times throughout the series, including:
- Fan's glitching as he was being abducted in "Hatching the Plan".
- Cabby's parents that were mentioned in "Spring on the Breakfast!".
- The contestants figuring their traits "had been there for as long as they could remember", being mentioned several times throughout website bios and Exit Interviews.
- Although not confirmed, it is implied that MePhone4 had created all of the contestants subconsciously. This was later confirmed in "Through No Choice of Your Own".
- It is additionally implied that MePhone himself upgraded the world to be higher quality, implying that every single graphical upgrade the series has had is part of the canon.
- Steve Cobs' speech additionally hints towards MePhone being responsible for the islands weird formations and landmarks, including the large egg-colored patterns and Purgatory Mansion.
- This may have been hinted towards in the final flashback in "Mine Your Own Business", as the background seems to have no landscape whatsoever.

- OJ - Patrick Mealey, previously played by Taylor Grodin
- The recast was announced for this episode ahead of time, as OJ was seen speaking in the trailer.[3]
- Tissues - Braden Whiteside, previously played by Taylor Grodin
- Steve Cobs - Joshua Waters, previously played by Peter Mancuso
- Bow - Skyler Lent, previously played by Taylor Grodin
- Dough - Sacri, previously played by Taylor Grodin
- OJ - Patrick Mealey, previously played by Taylor Grodin
- This is Cherries' first appearance in an episode in nearly 10 years, if their appearance in the Butterflies comic is not counted.
- Releasing only 28 days after "Truth or Flare", this will be the fastest release in Inanimate Insanity history, beating the 29 day gap between "The Great Bluish Bake Off" and "The Show Must Go On".
- An AnimationEpic Instagram story posted by Adam Katz on September 6, 2024 revealed this was possible due to stacked production time with no viewer voting. For example, as soon as Episode 15 was done being written, Episode 16 could be written, and as soon as Episode 15 was being storyboarded, Episode 16 could start storyboarding. Adam said production for "The Reality of the Situation" started on April 15th, 2024, with the previous episode "Truth or Flare" starting in mid-February 2024. This means "The Reality of the Situation" had a production time of just under five months, although the crew was busy for six weeks with the BFDI & Inanimate Insanity 2024 Tour.
- Ironically, the gap between "Truth or Flare" and "Hatching the Plan", the two previous episodes, has the longest gap between episodes in II history, at 1,470 days.
- The trailer for this episode reached #10 on YouTube trending the day of its release.[4]
- This episode reached 1,000,000 views on September 27, 2024, making it the fastest episode to ever reach this milestone.
- Following the release of the trailer, Brian Koch did several small contests with fans to reveal the title of the episode.
- On September 3, 2024, Brian revealed during the Inanimate Insanity II: The Movie QNA stream that the episode title began with "The".
- Later that same day, he did a contest asking his followers to get his Twitter account to 20K followers. Due to the goal being reached, he revealed the second word is "Reality".[5]
- On September 4, Brian made a post asking people for impressive responses to what they would do if they received a call from Steve Cobs, revealing the third word if he liked one. He ended up choosing a post by the user Scribbles626, revealing the third word to be "Of".[6]
- On September 5, Steve Cobs took over Brian Koch's Twitter account. Cobs then asked the fans to give him ideas for new Meeple products, and would reveal the 4th word afterwards. Later, Steve Cobs revealed the word to be "The" before giving Brian back the account.[7]
- On September 6, Brian hosted a final challenge to determine the 5th and last word, being a game of hangman with Nick Le. This revealed that the final word in the title would be "Situation".[1]
- Both Cakebrunch's and WoopDoo's characters can also be seen in the audience during Steve Cobs' song.
Deaths[]
- MePhone1 was impaled with a spear by the Light Shimmers
- MePhone3G was impaled with a spear whilst trying to escape the Light Shimmers
- Pickle was deleted by MePhoneX
- OJ was deleted by MePhoneX
- Soap was deleted by MePhoneX (Offscreen, debatable)
- Guava was deleted by MePhoneX (Offscreen, debatable)

Goofs[]
- In the trailer, Taco's shell was cracked. Although not a mistake, Brian Koch stated on Twitter that it may have been a red herring, which was confirmed true upon release of the episode.
- At 15:34, Yin-Yang's asset breaks, with Yang's position noticeably further to the right.
