The episode starts with Marshmallow grabbing a remote from the stairs. Next, Paintbrush, Fan and Test Tube all confront Marshmallow about why she left the show. Paintbrush says that she left without anyone telling anyone. Apple then tells them that in Marshmallow's defense, she told her. Marshmallow then talked about when she wanted to come back to Purgatory Mansion but Paintbrush never listened to her. But Paintbrush then says this was false because if they weren't listening, they'd remember, then lets out a laugh, making everyone stare at them angrily. Paintbrush then sees the issue about not remembering what she told them. Marshmallow tells Paintbrush that they wanted to be the leader of the team but always had a fire to put out, but Paintbrush tells her that they maybe had one to start. Marshmallow tells them that it was the game for them, like it takes over their entire life. Paintbrush then realizes how much it affected Marshmallow and tells her they didn't know how she felt. She tells them that she didn't know either until she started talking with Bow and that leaving it all wasn't an option.

Later in the video, a cameo of MePhone appeared drawing the members of Spoiled Lemon while humming the tune of Springtastic, but throws the paper away. Paintbrush understands Marshmallow, knowing that it was like they couldn't break the rules and do whatever they wanted. Another cameo of MePhone appeared with him drawing Knife on another paper. Paintbrush further adds that there was like a way they were supposed to act, while MePhone puts Suitcase's paper next to Knife's. Marshmallow adds on that the show brings out the worst in the contestants. This is followed by Apple admitting she can be possessive, and Fan saying he doesn't know if he could stand to see how annoying he was. Marshmallow proceeds to talk about Knife, and the times that he would kill her, shock her, burn her, and throw her across the island for a joke. Bow adds on that the show cost her own life, but before she could talk about what she did to come back, she started screaming again. Fan restates how similar the shrieking sounded to The Baby Shimmer. He turns to Test Tube, noticing she was frightened by something. Test Tube points towards "a new MePhone" standing the hallway, shortly before dying.

Back at Meeple Headquarters following just where we left off, Steve Cobs asks Suitcase and Knife if they had any questions about what he had just told them. Knife angrily punches him and breaks his glasses, before being apprehended by 2 MeTags, Cobs brushes this off and asks if MePhone4 is still there, taunting Him a little asking if he'd be more comfortable talking to A.D.A.M. Suitcase is shown to be confused and freaking out a bit, stuttering and questioning the whole thing. She then angrily asks MePhone4 why he made her the way she was, with her struggled with hallucinations before having a bit of an existence crisis questioning if her mind, friends and life are even real. MePhone4 tries to explain himself until Tissues comes in the closet as MePhone4 covers Steve Cobs' name on his head. Tissues talks about "spam callers" never giving up, and Suitcase tells him that it must suck for him to always be sick since MePhone4 thinks it's funny, calling it a "big joke". Tissues is both shocked and confused by this. Then, yet another cameo of MePhone4 drawing Tissues on a paper, with the words "ALWAYS SICK" at the bottom. MePhone4 says that it was just a "cute idea", to which Suitcase retorts that it's bad to live a life where there's always something wrong with you with things you can't fix. Knife also calls him out, saying that they could have been anything, but MePhone4 had to make them broken. Suddenly, the call ended. MePhone4 tries to talk to Tissues, who then gets deleted by MePhoneX in front of him, to his shock.

While in shock, Knife questions how they did not realize the truth sooner. Steve then reveals to them that they were only able to saw what MePhone4 let them see, as a video explaining what happened, MePhone4 could freeze them all in time, while working on another project and they wouldn’t know the difference, like an old save file right, right where he left it. Steve Cobs turns to face Knife and Suitcase when questioned about how he would like to end the show. Back in the closet, MePhone4 is wiping his tears with Tissues' tissues, until he hears knocking from the door. MePad teleports in to check in on MePhone. MePhone4 wants to do something as the contestants think he doesn't care what happens to them. But MePad stops him, telling him that while he wants to face Cobs, it would be a "selfish act", reminding him that everyone won't be revived again if MePhone4 dies. He then says that while he feels responsible for them, he never knew how MePhone felt as their host. MePad tells MePhone4 to join them outside of what's happening.

After, MePad and MePhone get out of the door and Baseball asks what Yin what he's seeing, and says he's seeing a MePhone, causing everyone to go in shock, but Yin says it's not their MePhone, making everyone relieved. Yang then says that Yin should've clarified. MePhoneX gets closer to Yin-Yang and making Yin more scared and asks if Yang can see MePhoneX aswell but he doesn't. MePhoneX gets even closer to Yin-Yang and Yang says that he is afraid for once and that he and Yin have the same point of view but before Yang could finish his sentence he gets deleted by MePhoneX. After Yin-Yang's death, everyone is in shock about what happened. Baseball finds MePhone and tells him that it's been pretty rough about everyone getting deleted by MePhoneX and that he's piecing together on what's happening and says that he thinks that the remaining contestants alive are finally on the upswing. After he says that, a flashback of MePhone appears drawing what Baseball looks like and how he should act. He writes that he "always strikes out". After the flashback MePhone says it's good.

After, Lightbulb tells everyone to stand to attention and tells everyone to focus on the situation and also telling Bomb to get off the couch and to turn off the game that Pickle used to play. Bomb tells Lightbulb that it was Pickle's favorite but Paper tells him that there are other ways to remember him. Bomb understands and unplugs the game. Cheesy tells everyone that he'd host a slam poetry night to "remember the fallen". But Bomb asks him what makes him think he's not gonna die and Cheesy tells Bomb that he's not going to. But then Bomb tells him if he goes there, he is gonna "bomb", making a pun. Baseball tells everyone to form a circle of protection and says that MePhone needs to go in the middle. MePhone tells him that it won't be necessary and that he doesn't deserve any of that. Baseball tells him that it served two purposes which were guarding MePhone and knowing where everyone is at all times. MePhone wasn't in but still volunteered either way.

Lightbulb tells everyone to align in their position and says that it'd only work if they had everyone. Silver Spoon tells everyone not to worry because he came, the others are sure to follow. Baseball asks who he is because he, probably, doesn't consider Silver's precense important enough to remember. Balloon asks where Suitcase is and Baseball replies that she and Knife were in the final challenge and the next time they see them they'll know who won. Balloon says that he hopes Suitcase is okay and asks MePhone what the challenge was because he wasn't there when MePhone announced it. MePhone mentions that everyone isn't here. Lightbulb notices that her former team members weren't there and says that she downplayed the darkness and let her members leave. She says that she needed to go get her members and leaves but Baxter came with her aswell. Before she left Baseball tells her that he'll watch over everyone. After that, Lightbulb leaves. Pepper tells Salt that she was latching on and Salt asks, "What else is new?". After that Pepper looks sad and Salt apologizes and tells her that she was a bit fiesty ever since her boyfriend died. Paper shouts at her saying that OJ is not her boyfriend and Salt asks if he doesn't know already and tells him to leave her alone, but says that he was obviously her ex, making Paper more angry.

MePad says to everyone that no matter what happens, everyone working and trusting each other is what he had longed to see. While he isn't in service of the game, he is in service to them and they all are to each other. Baseball then says that they still need "someone else" to join them in the circle. MePad is unsure that he'll be able to get through to her after what happened earlier. Baseball says that they have to try, as MePad's their best chance. Microphone shows a determined look on her face and volunteers to talk to Taco off-screen. Meanwhile, Lightbulb is running out of the hotel with Baxter by her side, clicking her pen repeatedly and hoping to find her friends.

Production Notes[]

Continuity References[]

  • This episode reveals very vital information regarding MeLife.
    • MeLife was created using the organic energy from the lost Shimmer egg that MePhone3GS had delivered to Cobs, as confirmed by the wire Toilet stole in "Theft and Battery".
    • The app is not only responsible for creating a majority of the characters, but nearly every single landmark on Inanimate Island itself.
      • Additionally, this episode reveals that characters generated by MeLife are connected to the large striped mountains around the island, hence why they disappear after contestants get deleted.
    • The main hard drive for MeLife is contained inside of Me, which is why everything disappears after Toilet disconnects the wire it was plugged into it.
      • This was possible due to a wire that Toilet had stolen and put inside of MePhone4 all the way back in "Theft and Battery", which was revealed to have let Cobs hijack MeLife itself.
  • The flashback scenes at the beginning of the episode additionally reveal more information about the creation of the contestants:
  • Steve Cobs refers to the Light Shimmers as "Phenomse", which was foreshadowed back in "Theft and Battery", as the wire Toilet stole was named "Model PH3N0M53 VK0cH".
    • "Phenomse" is an anagram for "MePhones".
  • During the episode, it has been revealed that MePhone4 froze the final 4 contestants in place when leaving, leading the season to a hiatus before he managed to make the third season, Inanimate Insanity Invitational, which is the reason why the finalists couldn't remember him leaving to make a 3rd season.
    • It is unknown if this affected Taco and MePad, as neither of them were inside of Hotel OJ and MePhone wasn't aware of Taco's presence.
    • Additionally, MePhone can be seen using a ballpoint pen in the flashbacks, which looks eerily similar to the Ballpoint Pen seen in "Out of Body Experience".
  • Microphone saying that "all [Taco] wants is to help" is a callback to "Rain on Your Charade", where Taco says the same thing to Microphone when they first meet.
  • Test Tube in Suitcase's hallucination saying "I thought you were smarter than this." is the same thing Suitcase said to her in that one episode "Hatching the Plan".
  • When Bow falls over after telling her story, it looks similar to a pose she made in "The Great Escape".

Behind the Scenes[]

  • While Soap does not appear in this episode, she was originally animated in a Hotel OJ scene before being replaced by Starfruit in the final episode. It is currently unknown whether this was a placeholder or not.[2]

Cultural References[]

  • Baseball is shown to be confused upon seeing Silver Spoon, as the two have never met each other before. This is a likely reference to the DuckTales episode "Moonvasion!", where Violet Sabrewing displays a similar reaction to Darkwing Duck.
  • Knife saying "Only one of us can win" is a possible reference to Pin saying the same line in the Battle for Dream Island episode "Take the Plunge".

Trivia[]

  • At 33 minutes in length, this episode officially breaks the record of the longest episode of the entire series, beating out "Kick the Bucket" and its 31 minute runtime.
    • Its longest episode record would later be broken by "Objects in Mirror" one month later.
  • This episode is the first appearance of Liv Smith voicing Toilet, replacing Taylor Grodin.
    • After this episode, all of Taylor's major roles have been recasted.
  • Similar to "The Reality of the Situation", Brian Koch did several small contests to reveal words in this episode's title, albeit being more like community events compared to the previous episode. The words were confirmed to be out of order when Brian revealed them, telling the fans to put them in the right order. After all words were revealed, the speculated episode title was "Through No Choice of Their Own". However, Brian tweeted a few hours before the episode "Update: What was theirs is now yours." which made the final episode's title "Through No Choice of Your Own".[3]
    • On October 9, 2024, Brian Koch asked people to reply with their own covers of "The Future Is So Yesterday", asking for 52 covers in total by the end of the day. At the end of the day, he revealed that two words in the episode's title were "THEIR", and "OF".
    • On October 10, Brian asked people to edit MePhoneX into images. Later that day, he revealed two more words: "CHOICE" and "THROUGH".
    • On October 11, then asked people to tell them what the show Inanimate Insanity meant to them for the rest of the title. Later that day, he revealed the last two words: "NO" and "OWN".
  • Steve Cobs, MePhone4, Bot, Baxter, Dough, Bow, MePad, and MePhone3GS were the only 8 characters remaining at the end of this episode, due to Steve Cobs' actions, and Toilet's sacrifice.
  • The way contestants defeat Steve Cobs is possibly themed after cancellation of production.
  • This episode has the most number of deaths than any episode in history, due to Steve Cobs' actions, along with Toilet's sacrifice.
  • Here is every victim and the stereotypes MePhone4 made them with revealed killed by Steve Cobs using MePhoneX upon vandalizing their dead bodies.
    • Baseball: Always strikes out[4]
    • Balloon: Full of hot air[5]
    • Bomb: False alarm
    • Salt: Trend setter
    • Pepper: Trend follower
    • Cherries: Wants a reaction
    • Trophy: Sore loser
    • Cheesy: Unserious
    • Cabby: Forgets what she knows
    • Candle: Must be needed
    • Goo: Inconsistant[sic]
    • Silver Spoon: Thinks he's worthless

Deaths[]

Imaginary Deaths[]

  • Suitcase was ripped apart by Knife.
  • Balloon, Nickel, Baseball, Fan, and Test Tube were deleted, in order, in Suitcase's hallucination.

Goofs[]

  • At 14:50, when Fan says “Why Bow Sounded like Egg!” the subtitles misspell it as “Why Bow sounded ike Egg!” This was later fixed.

  • From 1:13 onwards, the TV remote that Marshmallow places on the stairs is missing.
  • At 24:52, Bow doesn’t have eyelashes.
  • At 30:48, there are two frames where Steve Cobs has a different expression on his face. Suitcase's walk cycle animation also resets after two frames.

  1. 1.0 1.1 Knife and Suitcase both got deleted before the actual winner was chosen. Some can argue them to be unranked. Others can argue they tie for first, to fill what would be the missing slot. Additionally, Knife said that "there won't be a winner" to Steve Cobs.
