"Truth or Flare" is the 15th and penultimate episode of Inanimate Insanity II, and the 52nd episode overall. It was shown live at the BFDI & Inanimate Insanity 2024 Tour, alongside TPOT 12 or BFDIA 14 on dates ranging from June 28 to August 4, 2024. The episode released on YouTube on August 10, 2024, the same day as BFDIA 14.
This episode also directly follows the events of the finale of Inanimate Insanity Invitational.
Synopsis[]
After facing a season full of invading aliens, mysterious memories, and evil corn, many of the contestants are ready to hide the drama away. But when an old friend emerges from the bushes, every truth will be lit by the flame.
Plot[]
Kicking off from where the previous episode left off, MePad is reactivated by Taco. She asks if he knows who she is as she had been "low profile" recently. MePad says that he did, and had always wanted to meet her. MePad asks what it is that Taco wants, and she says that she requires details for the next challenge that will occur. MePad informs Taco that MePhone4 does not keep the million dollars on set, which Taco is aware of, being embarrassed about it. Taco adds that she no longer cares about the money. MePad tells her that she had the challenge on file and didn't need to be activated to access it. Taco figures that talking to someone helped her think. MePad hopes that she wasn't alone all this time. Taco, looking at Microphone inside of Hotel OJ, sadly claims that she wasn't. She tells MePad to show him the file, which he quickly does. Taco then rubs her hands together in glee, forming another plan.
Before the Challenge[]
Lightbulb is seen looking through a box of items left behind by Test Tube. Suitcase, Baseball and Knife approach her to talk about the vote. Lightbulb claims that they do like approaching people when they are vulnerable, with Knife calling it a "random act of kindness". Suitcase comforts Lightbulb that they're here for her. Lightbulb asks Baseball why he put away their "rivalry" as team captains, which Baseball didn't see them as. She calls him over, and asks why he had voted out Test Tube. Baseball reassures that it was "nothing personal", and due to being the only one left in her team, she could win it for them. Suitcase realizes how close she had been to her allies. Lightbulb explains she didn't understood what "allies" meant, before being cut off by Knife who assures them they should focus with their "drama" cleared up. Baseball, Suitcase and Lightbulb remind him of all the other occurrences that happened, including supposed aliens, Microphone quitting, and the gems with MePhone's memories. Knifes agrees that it was all bizarre and doesn't know what they could do, but says they can't let it distract them as they're close to the end of the game. Just as Suitcase says they can't just act like all the things never happened, Lightbulb pulls out an InvisiBow. Suitcase is shocked to recognize the bow, with Knife looking conflicted when he saw it. Lightbulb puts it on Suitcase and makes her invisible, causing her to hyperventilate. Knife then quickly grabs the bow and stomps it under his foot. Lightbulb then finds what she was looking for: a pen that Lightbulb could click whenever she felt nervous. Suitcase asks if she is, and Lightbulb responds that she isn't and just wanted to prove to them that she's not.
MePhone4 then calls the Final 4 with a megaphone to begin the penultimate challenge. Suitcase tells the others to not make him feel weird about this as it's his first challenge without any assistants, MePhone jokingly says that the challenge would be to "learn how to whisper" (additionally saying that Suitcase had "lost"). He then explains that due to them all being hard to deal with, he decided to take a vacation. Baseball is confused by this due to seeing him last night. MePhone instead brushes this off with another jab at them. He then tells them that they would need to walk through the woods to where the challenge would be hosted, and would have to collect sticks on the way. Lightbulb asks if they could eat the sticks, with MePhone sternly saying they needed them. He then explains the challenge: The contestants would build a fire using their sticks to reach their respective ropes. The first contestants to burn through their rope would get into the Finals, while the last would be eliminated. The remaining Slams are shocked, while Lightbulb calls it "easier". Baseballs asks what would happen to the 2nd/3rd placers. MePhone says they would "duke it out" later.
Whilst the contestants are doing the first part of the challenge, Taco and MePad watch them from the bushes. Taco believes that she is incapable of starting over her with Pickle and Microphone, as well as believing she can't be regenerated, while MePad tries to convince her otherwise. As the contestants arrive at the challenge area, Taco places an InvisiBow onto MePad, turning him invisible. She grins, now ready to set her plan into motion ("Taco's Tirade").
Challenge[]
Lightbulb asks to MePhone for the amount of sticks to win the challenge, with the rope being an unreasonably tall distance away. Baseball then questions the expectation of the height of the fire, and Knife continued on with there not being a downside of him setting large fires. MePhone then reveals a twist: they could make the fire go higher organically, or could answer his questions to raise the platforms, dubbing the challenge "Truth or Flare". Seemingly out of nowhere, Taco appears, and goes on to say that he “had a way with words”. MePhone questions her sudden appearance and suspects another plan. Taco denies this accusation and revealed she wanted to run the part of the challenge, additionally revealing MePad much to MePhone's shock. Taco reassures that MePad was fine, but threatened MePhone to not make any sudden moves. MePhone questioned the decision to MePad, who tells him that this is what Taco needed. MePhone gives in and allows Taco to host the challenge. Knife assures the other contestants they would get through this, with Lightbulb graciously thanking him.
Taco and MePad hop inside of a newly fashioned cookie hovercraft, additionally turning MePad invisible. She greets the returning contestants, and turns to Suitcase, who she had not formally met. Suitcase recognizes her voice, which leads Taco to show off her bow to jog her memory. Taco decides to give Suitcase the first question, which was whether she was ever motivated to befriend Balloon out of spite due to her alliance disliking him. Suitcase answers that she believed he deserved a second chance, which raises her platform. Taco then turns to Lightbulb, who tries to crack a joke. Taco shuts her up and asks her if she believed she deserved to have made it as far as she did. Ligthbulb believes it is important that she wins for her team, raising her platform. She then asks if she herself believed she could win. Lightbulb says that she believed in herself, but her platform lowers, indicating otherwise.
Baseball calls against Taco, leading him to be asked next. Baseball is asked whether he believed he put his team before himself. He remarks about how Nickel told him the same thing, and believes it had to be true due to how much he had beaten himself up over it. The platform lowers, much to his surprise. She moves onto Knife, asking if he took the rules of the game seriously. He twists her words, saying he took them more seriously than her. Taco then mentions that everyone who "cheats" should be disqualified, defining it as "someone who was receiving outside help" or "the person who caught the receiver kept it a secret". Knife points out the drastic difference, but claims that if they weren't getting help then they simply weren't cheating.
She goes back to Suitcase, asking if Baseball's comparison between her and Nickel and him and Test Tube was fair, having used "nothing personal". Baseball is confused by this and believes she didn't care about Nickel. Suitcase calls him out and how it simply didn't work, raising her platform. He asks her if they could move past their alliance, which leads Taco to ask him if he forgave Suitcase for voting Nickel out. Baseball hesitates but states that it wasn't her fault, believing she was simply a victim of circumstance. She then asks a question for the whole group; a lot of strange situations had been happening recently, and whether they wanted to focus back on the game. All four contestants raise their hands/legs in agreement. Taco is surprised on how they would just push aside "distractions", mentioning the aliens themselves and how she had encountered them. Lightbulb asks if they had "funny hats", with Taco saying they looked like floating eggs.
Lightbulb is upset that her hat question was ignored, additionally pointing out that Taco seemed "stressed". She then asks why she was rapidly clicking her pen. Lightbulb dismisses the question, which lowers down her platform. She briefly squeaks out that she was scared and needed help, raising it back up. Taco then goes back to Knife, bluntly asking if he knew about her presence in the show before today. He dodges the question by mentioning the first season. Taco gets fed up by this, and manages to force a confession out of him by threatening to tell them herself. Suitcase is shocked to hear this, although Knife says it wasn't out of any faith to Taco, refusing to admit who he was defending.
Taco points out his "protectiveness" despite roasting Marshmallow alive several times. Knife attempts to justify it by saying "she always came back", deflecting opposing viewpoints from Baseball and Lightbulb. Taco calls Knife out, calling him a "tough, scary brute" who forced others to agree with him. Although he tries to deflect that, Taco asks the other contestants if they trusted him. They all three shake their heads, raising their platforms.
Taco goes back to Suitcase, asking her what she believed the bowtie she saw in the cave was. Suitcase looks into her fire and takes a deep breath, and then reveals that she had been having hallucinations and was used to seeing things. This leave the contestants shocked and worried, with Baseball attempting to ask how long they had been occurring for. Taco says she didn't know Suitcase would say that. She uses this to bring up another point, that none of the contestants should have to go through this. She states that her desire for the million made her lose more than all of them, and then urges the contestants to leave the show. MePhone is shocked and sternly states that nobody would be leaving.
Taco asks about his "vacation", believing he might have been staying too close to the show after MePhone admits he did it to find something "new". She says to the contestants that Microphone had the right idea, urging them again to leave. None of the contestants respond, leading her to rant about how staying would result in them being mentally tortured with no win in sight. At that moment, Suitcase's fire burns through her rope, giving her a spot in the finals. She continues on her tangent, claiming that all MePhone had taught them to do was keep the fires rising and ruin their relationships. MePhone angrily says that Taco had broke the rules set in place. Taco then points out how the rules themselves always catered towards HIM or towards his "messes", creating double eliminations to turn everyone against eachother. She warns the contestants to leave for the final time.
Suddenly, Taco hears rustling from behind her in the bushes. Lightbulb is happy to see that her pen "worked", leading Taco to demand an answer out of her. Lightbulb reveals that the pen was also a "signal", figuring that anyone could have answered the call. Believing it was one of her old friends, Taco's shell begins to crack from stress. She stumbles over and turns off MePad's InvisiBow. Knife, however, talks down to Taco, using this as an opportunity to pressure him to face her past. Suddenly, Taco's shell completely cracks, breaking her body apart and sending her vegetables onto the floor. MePhone receives the MeLife notification to recover her, but swipes it away out of uncertainty. He then "continues" the challenge.
The remaining three contestants continue to grow their fires. Lightbulb however, is distracted by someone calling her name, revealing themself to be Paintbrush. Lightbulb is overjoyed to see them again. Paintbrush describes an "emergency signal" that Test Tube had alerted them about. She asks about the "hotel life", being told that she had missed a lot. She tells them that she would make sure to win the show to not disappoint them and any of her friends. Paintbrush says that they were proud of them no matter what. Baseball's rope snaps, leaving one spot left. Paintbrush begins to walk back but is stopped by Lightbulb, who tells them her biggest goal was to win the game. Lightbulb's platform drops to the bottom, which was her real goal. She tells them she didn't want them to not leave. Knife ends up cutting through his rope, which meant that Lightbulb was the 17th eliminated contestant from Inanimate Insanity II.
MePhone gives Lightbulb a dunce hat and opens the Rejection Portal. Suitcase approaches the two and says she was happy for her, and asks what she was saying about allies earlier. Lightbulb says that allies gave you strength, but no one would ever know where they got it from. Lightbulb and Paintbrush laugh to each other and walk through the portal.
Post-Challenge[]
MePhone attempts to talk to MePad, who points out Taco's remains on the floor. MePhone attempts to deter from the situation but MePad demands that he recovers her, as he "holds her life in his hands". After hesitating and being asked by Knife, he gives in and revives Taco. A tear form's on Taco's eye, having believed Pickle or Microphone had arrived. MePad tells everyone that what he did next was his "formal resignation", teleporting away with Taco. MePhone briefly stands still, but turns around to tell the contestants he hoped they enjoyed the challenge, but admits Taco was right. Suitcase attempts to tell him that she understood why he was afraid of Cobs, and that if they worked together they could face what's ahead. MePhone instead cuts her off and says that he was just hiding a twist for his show.
Elimination[]
The scene cuts to the Elimination Area, where MePhone reveals that Suitcase would be choosing between Knife and Baseball to join her in the finals. Suitcase is rightfully angry over this, saying she really hated him. She states that she wouldn't hide behind the game like him, and this was her decision. She asks for one more truth from both of them. For Knife, she asks him if his advice on the The Docks was meant to help her or was simply for an advantage. Knife admits that it had felt advantageous, but he wanted to help her and didn't like what he was seeing. She asks Baseball if he truly understood why she had left the alliance. Baseball says that he now realized that she wasn't getting the respect she deserved. Between the two, Suitcase chooses Knife, making Baseball the 18th eliminated contestant from Inanimate Insanity II.
Suitcase tells Knife that what he had said on the docks had given him strength, and that was what an alliance was to her. She attempts to talk to Baseball to explain herself but is cut off by Baseball multiple times. Baseball tells her that he doesn't want to make her any more anxious than she is, and enters the Rejection Portal. He enters Hotel OJ to find Lightbulb alongside her friends. The two discuss their teams, while Baseball figures he missed everything about his. Lightbulb tells him if he wants to be a good captain, he has to make sure he's looking. Taco and MePad watch from outside, discussing whether MePad could've left whenever he wanted. Watching Pickle and Mic talking, Taco declares that she wouldn't hide anymore.
Knife stands next to Suitcase in the elimination area, and consoles her over Baseball's elimination. Suitcase hopes that Knife would be a strong competitor in the Finals. Although Knife sees her as a strong player, Suitcase is unsure if he can trust her after the Taco situation. He asks why he chose him, with Suitcase calling it a "random act of kindness". MePhone appears, commentating on how Suitcase "stabbed" another friend in the back, while Knife had gotten carried through the entire game. MePhone tells the viewers to stay tuned, shortly before receiving a call from Steve Cobs.

Continuity References[]
- Despite taking place after Inanimate Insanity Invitational, Baseball reveals that it had only been a day since the events of "Hatching the Plan". This was later explained in "Through No Choice of Your Own", where it was revealed that MePhone had frozen the Final 4 and Taco in time.
- Knife and his teammates approach Lightbulb as a "random act of kindness", similar to how Suitcase asks him to do the same in "Everything's A-OJ".
- The remaining contestants mention the aliens and the Gemories that they had heard about or encountered in "Mine Your Own Business" and "Hatching the Plan".
- Taco forces Knife to admit that he knew about Taco secretly working to steal the million, which he found out about in "Alternate Reality Show".
- She additionally mentions the several times he had murdered Marshmallow throughout Season 1.
- Lightbulb asking if they had to eat the sticks, as well as putting a large amount of sticks in her mouth, is a reference to "Tri Your Best", where she ate the stick she was given as a prize for being safe.
Trivia[]
- This episode released exactly 1,470 days after "Hatching the Plan", making it the longest jump between two episodes in the same season in the show's history.
- After the episode was released, the YouTube banner was updated again, this time going back to the Season 2 formation.
- Additionally, the characters now have slightly updated renders, with notable changes include; the updated assets, and small eye adjustments.
- However, as of August 2024, The Remaining Competitors section in the official II website still recognizes Lightbulb and Baseball as the remaining finalists, even though they're eliminated, as well with the old assets not yet altered because it still uses the 2018 art style.
- This episode features new assets for several characters in the show, including Lightbulb (who now has a shine on her bottom), Baseball (whose outline is now gray), Knife, Cherries and Apple (who have new shines).
- These new assets were reveals for the first time in a post made by AnimationEpic for the season's 11th anniversary.[15]
- Additionally, this episode received upgraded backgrounds, which were painted by Sean Thurlow.
- This is the first episode to include MePad on its thumbnail, 11 years after his first appearance.
- This is the first episode where Toilet does not make an appearance since "Cooking for the Grater Good".
- This episode released on the same day as BFDIA 14. The JacknJellify twitter account advertised this event as "BFDIIIenheimer", referencing the two movies Barbie and Oppenheimer, which both released on July 21, 2023.
- However, BFDIA 14 released later, in the evening/night hours. (~5PM EST)
- This episode peaked at #14 on YouTube trending the night of it's release.[16]
- This episode was shown live at six different locations and dates during the BFDI & Inanimate Insanity 2024 Tour:
- June 28-30, 2024 at the NYU Skirball Center (New York City)
- July 6, 2024 at the Linda & Archie Dunham Theater (Houston, TX)
- July 13 and 14, 2024 at the SIFF Cinema Egyptian (Seattle, WA)
- July 20 and 21, 2024 at the Saban Media Center (Los Angeles, CA)
- July 27, 2024 at the Harris Theater (Chicago, IL)
- August 3 and 4, 2024 at the Miniaci Performing Arts Center (Fort Lauderdale, FL)
- This was the third episode in Inanimate Insanity to be shown in a theater, following “Tri Your Best” and "Spring on the Breakfast!" (during the 2023 BFDI x II Experience).
- The challenge gives the episode's name, Truth or Flare.
- After Lightbulb was eliminated...
- she became the first Inanimate Insanity II team captain to become eliminated.
- there were no more members of the Bright Lights left in the competition, leaving only contestants in the Grand Slams in the Final 3.
- Suitcase became the only female contestant left in the competition.
- Knife became the only contestant with arms left in the competition.
- After Baseball was eliminated...
- there were no more Inanimate Insanity II team captains left in the competition.
- Knife became the only Season 1 veteran and the only male contestant left in the competition.
- Suitcase became the only armless contestant left in the competition.
- This is a third time a season has had a female finalist with the ability to carry objects inside of them (after Taco and Cabby).
- All three of them mostly competed with two limbs as well, though Taco was revealed to have hidden arms.
- This is the third time characters from the same team were in the finals, the other being from Season 1's OJ and Taco being on Team Chicken Leg, and technically, Cabby, Silver Spoon and Balloon being on The Pinkers after the team swap.
- Since Lightbulb and Baseball are not only both team captains, there were the 2nd and 3rd characters respectively to be eliminated in a meetup episode. The first one who ended up this fate was Bot in Season 3.
- This is the fifth episode to feature a musical number in Season 2. Following songs such as Keep On Cleaning, A Party, Afterlife in The Limelight, and Just Like Me! (might count as six songs since Just Like Me! has a reprisal)
- On a Jazzy Oliver stream, Justin Chapman confirmed that a previous draft of this episode was originally going to have a "body swap", but it was scrapped earlier into development.
- This the second time that Taco cries, and the first time she died.
- Although this is Taco's third death. The first two times she died were both back in the Season 1 episode "The Tile Divide", where first, when confirmed safe, she got a chainsaw slicing her in half, then later, she falls into the lava as her tongue got stuck in the spikes.
- This is the first time Knife had killed someone since Season 1.
- The flying hovermobile that Taco used bears a resemblance to the Eggmobile.
- An AnimationEpic Instagram story posted by Adam Katz on September 6, 2024 revealed production for the episode started in mid-February 2024. With the episode's completion being announced on May 17, 2024, this means it had a production time of about three months.
- As revealed during a QNA stream by Justin Chapman, a Knife and Taco body swap was originally planned for this episode, but was scrapped.
Goofs[]
- This may count as a visual flair, but in Taco's Tirade, when Taco sung the lyric "it's so pathetic", she was seen with four tomatoes around her shell when she's facing in the center. Which despite she actually only has three tomatoes in her shell.
Deaths[]
- Taco shatters from stress after being pressured by Knife.
